Lost Radio Rounders: Political Songs

"That's Why I'm Voting for Roosevelt"

(To the tune of "Marching Through Georgia")
Recorded live in Valatie, N.Y.

In 1936 F.D.R. and the Democrats were still running against the Herbert Hoover economy despite the fact that Hoover was gone and Alf Landon was heading the Republican ticket. Republicans predicted  that widespread business failures under a Roosevelt administration would leave grass growing on main streets across the county, and were taunted for that prediction in this song.

The choice of a Civil War melody despised in the South was somewhat odd for a 1930s presidential campaign song, but lyricist Thomas O’Dowd’s line “He brought us back prosperity, he gave us back our BEER!” provided a most compelling argument to vote for the incumbent.
