Lost Radio Rounders: Political Songs

"Grant! Grant! Grant!"

(To the tune of "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!")
Recorded live in Valatie, N.Y.

This 1868 campaign song was set to the melody of one Civil War classic, and the lyrics mention another! Grant’s post-war popularity would dash any hope that Lincoln's Vice President Andrew Johnson had of a Republican nomination for his own full presidential term.

Some military leaders have proven themselves fine chief executives, but U.S. Grant was not one of them. Ulysses Grant would pay dearly for his poor choices of political and business associates. His administration was riddled with scandal, and in retirement Grant would be swindled out of most of his savings.
